OCD w/ Olivia Levine – Ep. 92

Holy heat wave! Is summer almost over? We miss our flannels. Lucky for us, we got to have a cool conversation with the funny and grind-happy Olivia Levine about OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). It’s an anxiety disorder that is widely misunderstood, so Olivia breaks down what it is and how it manifests in her life. We talk about how it has intersected with her sexual identity and affected her relationships, as well as what she does to cope. But first, we talk about one of our favorite topics – Sarah’s lack of queer media consumption, as well as what it was like for Olivia growing up in San Francisco. And, we end by answering a listener question about coming out at work Special shout out to Dyke Soccer!

Stand-up Comedy w/ Ali Kolbert – Ep. 91

We invited the HILARIOUS Ali Kolbert (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) to come and dyke out about stand-up comedy, but it quickly turned into a roast. Carolyn gives a quick recap of her trip to Peru, or at least her understanding of it. Then, Ali calls out Sarah’s most problematic behavior: refusing to watch queer tv. So instead we talk about Big Little Lies, one of our favorite straight-people topics. Eventually we get to talking about being a queer stand-up comic, including performing in queer spaces and talking about our sexuality to straight audiences. We only scratch the surface, but hopefully it’s enough to give you an idea of what it’s like out there for queer women in comedy. Maybe we could have covered more, but Ali and Sarah were having too much fun with the sadder details of Carolyn’s past relationships.

Dyke Spaces w/ Alex Koones – Ep. 90

Whether you identify as lesbian, bisexual, queer, or ace, (cue Cheers theme song) sometimes you wanna go where everybody is a dyke. But when lesbian bars are closing down at the pace of Shane’s love life, we need to create new dyke spaces while supporting those that still exist. Alex Koones, the founder of Babetown dinner parties for queer women and trans and non-binary people, joined us to tell us about the dyke spaces she frequents, and the one she created. Why do we seek out these spaces? How have they changed over the years? How do you create dyke spaces in your community? This episode was recorded the Monday after NYC Pride, so Carolyn and Sarah also share how they celebrated, including Sarah’s thoughts on her first Dyke March. We end the episode with a listener’s question about internalized homophobia while trying to date women.

Rebounds w/ pronoun (Alyse Vellturo) – Ep. 89

Trying to bounce back from a broken heart can be fun, messy, and everything in between. Alyse Alyse Vellturo, who makes music under the name pronoun, joined us to dyke out about the different ways we try to get over one person by getting under another. Or how sometimes, you don’t need a person at all. We talk about what constitutes a rebound, how to communicate expectations, and when does a rebound stop being a rebound? Also, Sarah gives a very detailed example of a rebound gone bad in a series of hard-to-defend moves on her part. It’s a cautionary tale for our listeners. Before we get to the topic, Carolyn rants about how nobody under 30 seems to care about Madonna, and the dykes discuss how their pride week is going. Be sure to listen to pronoun’s album “i’ll show you stronger” and see when you can catch her on tour opening for Taking Back Sunday.

Sobriety w/ Be Steadwell – Ep. 88

Pride month is over, but let’s keep the gay going with a new episode! The talented Be Steadwell was in town to play the opening ceremony of world pride but made some time to dyke out about being sober. The queer community experiences addiction and alcoholism at higher rates than cis straight people, so whether you’re sober or not, it’s important to be aware of these struggles. We discuss why people decide to be sober, how it can affect relationships and your social life, the challenges, and the many perks. We also answer a listener question about dating as a newly out gay woman. Once you’re done listening, be sure to check out Be’s latest album, Queer Love Songs, out now!
