Trauma w/ Samantha Sidley – Ep. 119

Big episode alert! We’re dyking out with the VERY talented Samantha Sidley about trauma (trigger warning for sexual assault, car accidents, and eating disorders). Samantha is an incredible jazz singer and interpreter whose album Interior Person is out now. We talk all about the lasting impact that trauma has on our lives and different strategies for coping with it. This is a very special and important episode for many reasons. Samantha is an absolute joy and we really hope you check out her music and see her perform live if you can. Also, it’s our first official episode to launch the next phase of Dyking Out. That’s right, our co-host reveals herself, and we are so excited for the future of this podcast and its community. Much love to all of our Susans, now and always.

Internalized Homophobia w/ Rita Brent – Ep. 118

Comedian Rita Brent joins us to talk about the trifecta of factors that fed her internalized homophobia. Even the most out and proud of us have face some form of this harmful feeling that can make us act against our own interests or even hurt those around us. Rita talks about how growing up in Mississippi, in the church, and enlisting in the military all shaped her views of her queer identity. We’ve also got Melody Kamali in the co-host seat this week to give Rita tips on her recent move to New York and how to connect with Connecticut audiences. Plus, we end with a listener question from South Africa!

Butch w/ Kelli Dunham – Ep. 117

Finally, a whole episode dedicated to that butch life. Well, sort of. We couldn’t help but grill special guest, comedian/author/performer Kelli Dunham, about her past as a nun. And it’s every bit as awesome as Carolyn had hoped. Courtney Rada once again steps into the co-host seat as we talk about life as a queer butch. What is it like to have to explain and defend how you present to heteros? Which stereotypes ring the most true? Why are people such assholes about bathrooms? Plus, we answer a question from a recently-married Susan about – dun dun dun – lesbian bed death. Be sure to check out Kelli’s new comedy album: Not The Gym Teacher.
