Politics of Misogyny w/ Talia Lavin – Ep. 35

The hilarious, smart, and talented Talia Lavin (The New Yorker, Village Voice, Jewish Daily Forward) joins us to dyke out about the everyday rage fire that is misogyny, specifically, how it plays into politics and how different parties deal with it. Talia drops some knowledge about fearless Stormy Daniels and her MMA fighter– er, lawyer, and she shares her thoughts on why it’s important to hold people accountable for misogynistic and abusive behavior. We also salivate over the movie Disobedience, praise Lena Waithe’s wardrobe choices, and Talia tells us about a sex toy that has her seeing sparks.

Representation in Movies w/ Erin Greenwell – Ep. 34

Filmmaker Erin Greenwell – yeah, that’s right. We totally know people who aren’t comedians. Anyway, Erin Greenwell (Director, Writer, Editor of My Best Day which premiered at Sundance in 2012) joins us to talk about how queer representation has changed in movies over the years. We’ve come a long way from All About Eve…or have we? Why does every queer movie have to be a forbidden love story? As a film professor, Erin pushes her students to be true to their experiences in hopes that it translates to authentic stories that real people can relate to. Hopefully that will lead to more movies being made that Sarah will actually watch so that she knows what Carolyn and Karina are ranting about half the time. We also touch on all things Joy Reid and our excitement over Disobedience…even though it’s just another queer forbidden love story. We’ll see!

Young, Queer, & Famous w/ Sarah Pappalardo – Ep. 31

Sarah Pappalardo, co-founder of Reductress, joins us to dyke out about all of the queer women of Hollywood, youtube, and wherever else you see cool entertainers who also happen to be women. Why is coming out different for these ladies? How are they so cool? Are the days of coming out on the cover of Time magazine ancient history? Give a listen as we share our hopes and dreams for the futures of the young, queer, and famous.

Pansexuality w/ Mindy Raf – Ep. 30

Pansexual is no longer just the term once used to describe pixyland.org. It’s actually a sexual identity that an increasing number of people in the LGBTQ community identify with despite its anemic representation in mainstream media and pop culture. We’ve talked about it before, but wanted to invite quintuple threat Mindy Raf (TNT, VH1, MTV’s Girl Code) to dyke out about her pansexuality in more detail. We also revisit the topic of polyamory and do it much more justice than the first time around (sorry polys!). We hope you enjoy the discussion, and if not, then you can walk right out the fe-door-a (or just email us and tell us why). Plus, one of our hosts makes an exciting announcement that only her and her mom will probably care about! Tune in!

Sex w/ Emma Willmann – Ep. 29

She plays the new girlfriend of the non-crazy ex-girlfriend on the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, comedian Emma Willmann (Late Show, Sirius XM, NPR, HBO’s Crashing) drops by the Dyking Out studios to talk about sex…and comedy, and dating, and exes, and podcasts…but also sex. How do you figure out sexual boundaries? What role do toys play? What’s the right way to bring up STDs? Lesbian bed death? WHO’S THE MAN??? (SPOILER: It’s always Emma). Take a listen to this wild ride of an episode, and find out why Emma is a force on the comedy scene. Also…

The Closet w/ Kelley Quinn – Ep. 28

Because she’s no longer trapped in the closet, comedian Kelley Quinn (Upright Citizens Brigade) came to dyke out about what it’s like to have to keep your sexuality a secret. As many of us know, coming out is something that many in the LGBTQ community have to do over and over again. Can we envision a future where we no longer need to “come out” with our sexuality? What is the role of straight people in keeping us in the closet? Does anyone enjoy the closet? What about all the queers in Hollywood who keep dodging the issue?  We also talk about whether or not a movie is an appropriate first date, and which cartoon characters were totes gay. Take a listen! Sex Ed w/ Alyssa Robbins – Ep. 27

It’s our first guest who has a movie based on her life! Alyssa Robbins is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and the inspiration behind the movie Becks. We are thrilled that she joined us to talk about her side gig teaching sex education to adolescents. Listen and learn how far we’ve come from putting condoms on bananas! We make a pretty solid case for the importance of comprehensive sex education in schools, and also get Alyssa’s insight on what to do if you have a kid who masturbates way too much. Later on in the episode, we dyke out about our favorite LGBTQ movies and try to make “spreadin’ the jam” a thing. Plus, if you’re in New York City on March 17, 2018, be sure to come out to see Alyssa in concert at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn at 9pm.

Teachers w/ Pat Brown – Ep. 26

Fact: teachers make up 75% of the lesbian population – at least the lesbian population that Carolyn knows personally. We are thrilled to be joined by the incredible Pat Brown for this episode! She’s been on Late Night with Stephen Colbert, has been featured on AfterEllen.com, and has an amazing comedy album out now. We talk about the role of teachers in our lives and in the current political climate. Should they have guns at school? Do they know which kids are gay? Should they have guns at school knowing which kids are gay??? We also talk about Pat’s time attending the Grammy Awards! If we could have Pat on every week, we would. Take a listen and you’ll understand why.

Catholic School w/ Nikki Palumbo – Ep. 23

Comedy writer and proud gaytheist Nikki Palumbo (UCB, Above Average, Reductress) went to catholic school and lived to tell us about it. It turns out it’s not the lesbian underground we thought it was. How can one survive all the guilt and shame brought on by the church? How does a budding lesbian hide amongst the plaid skirts unnoticed? Are nuns even a little gay, and would they be offended that their calling is our backup plan when all else fails? We also dyke out about the super stressful experience of having to find a dude to go to prom with when it’s the last thing you want to be doing. Plus, Carolyn misremembers the plot points of one of her favorite movies.

P.S. This episode was recorded on Jennifer Aniston’s birthday, and boy is that Aveeno lotion working wonders! We’d like to formally thank Jennifer for sending our new intern Karina our way!

Polyamory w/ comedian Chewy May – Ep. 3

Stand up comedian Chewy May joins us to talk about her experiences with polyamory, and we debate whether or not Carolyn is cool enough to be in an open relationship (spoiler: she’s not). We also discuss gay rights in Louisiana, the female Lord of the Flies reboot, and what straight women are doing to their eyebrows.
